Looking forward to a gentleman’s fight in Johor

The state of Johor is without a doubt, the state where all eyes are drawn – whether from the Barisan Nasional side, or from the Pakatan Rakyat.
Big names from the opposition have been parachuted to this southern state of Malaysia, where they hope that the 1.5 million voters here will cast ballots in their favour.
For the Barisan Nasional, the pressure is on to retain power in this birthplace of Umno, and they are more determined than ever to keep Johor in their grasp.
Even with so much at stake, the battle for Johor has taken off in a gentlemanly fashion, with fierce rivals going so far as to praise each other.
On Saturday, the arguably 'hottest' seat in Johor – Gelang Patah – saw both DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang and former Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman shaking hands amicably with each other when they arrived almost at the same time at the nomination centre in Skudai here.
Each was accompanied by some 500 supporters, who marched to the centre ablaze with spirit (and lion dance troupes!) but were relatively respectful to one another -- but of course, the barbed wire blockade set up by the police was a major contributing factor to their peaceable gathering.
Even so, during a DAP grand 'ceramah' later that night on nomination day, Lim had gone up on stage and praised Ghani to some 8,000 people, saying that "he (Ghani) has done a good job in Johor, but it is time for change."
Notably absent are personal attacks or mudslinging in the week leading up to 'crunch-time', or the 15-day official campaigning period, as ceramahs and mini-ceramahs given by both sides focused on what each side will bring (or rather, promise) to the people of Johor.
Many leaders, like Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin (who is contesting the Permas state seat, and is touted as the next MB if BN wins Johor) chose to rally the machinery to spread BN's message of transformation, instead of spreading rumours.
Candidates even showed restraint when it came to commenting on their opponents, never delving into character attacks, but generally criticizing the manifestos or promises of the other side.
One only hopes that this spirit of political maturity continues well into the two-week campaign period until May 5.
However, this seemingly amiable atmosphere was slightly marred by the whole DAP 'rocket' symbol debacle, where the Registrar of Societies had notified the DAP that it did not recognize DAP's central executive committee elections last December, mere 48 hours before nomination day.
This meant that there was a possibility that the Election Commission could reject the letter of appointment issued by DAP leadership under its symbol, as the derecognition meant the DAP leadership was not 'legal.'
Although the ROS insisted that the DAP could still contest under the rocket symbol, the DAP had nonetheless taken an emotional approach to it, with DAP veterans insisting it was a 'diabolical' sabotage by the BN.
Nevertheless, now that the candidate nominations have been accepted, the fuss seems to have died down.
Perhaps it is now time to turn eyes to winning the hearts (and votes) of the people, preferably with little to no dirty tactics and a matured approach to politics – after all, the rakyat can judge, very clearly, the calibre of each candidate based on his or her substance, and will reject blustering and wild allegations.

Jabatan Pelajaran disalahguna: Pemantau buat laporan polis

10 to 1 odds on Guan Eng losing

PETALING JAYA (April 21, 2013): An illegal bookmaking syndicate in Penang is giving the odds of 10 to 1 that DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng will lose in the Air Putih state constituency, China Press reported today.
The report said the bookie has capped the bet at RM100 for each punter who must be a voter in the constituency. This means a voter who bets RM100 will receive RM1,000 if Lim loses.
The interim chief minister is being challenged by 41-year-old MCA lawyer Tan Ken Keong.
Apart from Air Putih, the syndicate is also giving the same or smaller odds against the candidates of DAP or Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in three other state constituencies, namely Pulau Tikus, Jawi and Bukit Tengah. And the bookie accepts bets only from voters from the respective constituencies.
In the last general election, Lim beat his Barisan Nasional (BN) opponent from MCA, Tan Yoke Cheng, by a 4,061-vote margin.
The fact that Tan obtained 2,540 votes despite the political tsunami means BN has 2,500 basic votes in the constituency.
This also implies that if 4,000 voters who supported Lim in 2008 vote for Ken Keong because of betting, the latter will turn dragon slayer come May 5.
In Pulau Tikus, betting, in which a punter gets RM5 for every ringgit bet, coupled with Lim's unpopular move to replace incumbent Koay Teng Hai with newbie Yap Soo Huey and the strengthening of the Gerakan in its former fortress, may cost DAP the seat.
As for Jawi, the odds that MCA candidate Tan Cheng Liang, a former assemblyman, will win the seat is 10-1.
The report said betting and possible sabotage, as a result of the incumbent Tan Beng Huat being replaced by newcomer Soon Lip Chee, may swing the result in favour of Cheng Liang.
Meanwhile, in Bukit Mertajam, Penang Barisan Nasional chief Teng Chang Yeow called on the public not to bet against the candidates.
"I would like to advise the public not to bet," he said today.
He added that it would affect all the candidates, regardless of whether they are from BN, Pakatan Rakyat (PR) or Independent.
Teng said betting was "normal" as it occurred during every general election and hoped that voters would act wisely.

Husam insincere in contesting Putrajaya seat: Muhyiddin

PUTRAJAYA (April 21, 2013): Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has questioned the sincerity of the PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa in contesting Putrajaya parliamentary seat.
He said the fact that Husam is also contesting Salor state seat in Kelantan shows that he is afraid of losing in Putrajaya.
"We (BN) want elected representatives who work and not sleep on the job. Putrajaya voters must give him a heavy defeat and if possible make sure he lose the deposit," he told a rally in Precinct 9 here tonight.
The clash in Putrajaya is a straight fight between the incumbent, Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Husam.
Muhyiddin reminded Putrajaya voters who are mostly civil servants of the opposition plan to reduce the number of civil servants if they came to power. This was in contrast to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak who is working hard to take care of the welfare of civil servants.
"I think that I am working hard but I see him (Najib) working doubly hard. Of course he is younger than me, but he works very hard," he added. – Bernama
