Zulkifli Noordin apologises to Indian community

Kulim-Bandar Baharu member of parliament Datuk Zulkifli Noordin today apologised for hurting the feelings of the Indian community in his speech, 10 years ago.

He said the speech was made when he was a member of PAS back then and admitted it was a mistake and expressed remorse over the statement as it was   inappropriate.
Zulkifli questioned the opposition parties why they were using his past speeches as a weapon to damage his image and reputation now that he is now pro-government.
"I was a lawyer for opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his first sodomy trial and was naive back then," he told reporters after giving a speech here, today.    Zulkifli is presently the vice-chairman of Perkasa. -- Bernama

Nallakaruppan to subpoena Karpal and two others

Senator Datuk S. Nallakaruppan intends to subpoena senior lawyer Karpal Singh, businesswoman Ummi Hafilda Ali and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's former driver Azizan Abu Bakar to appear as witnesses on his behalf in the defamation suit initiated by the opposition leader (Anwar) over defamatory remarks made in 2008.
Nallakaruppan's lead defence counsel Datuk Seri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said Karpal would be a "useful and helpful" witness in relation to what the member of parliament said in parliament over Azizan and Umi's disclosure to him during two meetings with him on Oct 22 and Dec 18 over the first sodomy incident involving him (Azizan) and Anwar.
"Based on the Hansard recording, Karpal had told parliament that he was impressed with Azizan's disclosure supported by a statutory declaration where he implicated Anwar and later became a subject matter of sodomy in court trial," Shafee told a press conference at the court complex, here.
Shafee described Karpal as an important parliamentarian with high credibility, where his testimony was crucial for the defendant (Nallakaruppan) to collaborate it with Azizan's disclosure of the incident.
"Even Karpal in 2007 also invited Anwar to file a defamation suit against Azizan and Umi on this matter," he said.
Asked whether he already obtained the subpoena, Shafee said the premilinary issue on the suit was still pending at the Court of Appeal (COA) and he would be making the application once the court set the dates for trial of the suit.
On March 26, 2008, Anwar filed the suit alleging that Nallakaruppan had uttered defamatory words against him which were then published on the front page of the Utusan Malaysia daily on March 20, 2008.
In his statement of claim, Anwar said the defamatory words included in the article were false, baseless, was published with ill intention and had tarnished his good name.
Anwar is seeking RM100 million in general, aggravated and exemplary damages, cost and other relief deemed fit by the court.

Explain China investment, Penang told

Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) has called on the state government to explain a RM3.14 billion investment in Wuhu, Anhui Province, China.
State BN information chief H’ng Khoon Leng said the investment was made in June 2011 and asked the relevant authority to give a full account of the project including the investment value.
“What is the progress of the project? The people of Penang do not seem to know anything about it,” he said at a press conference at state BN headquarters today.
According to a translated handout of a report by the Wuhu Daily, the project was titled Penang Electronic Park and situated in the Wuhu Economic and Technology Development Zone.
The report said the state government and other companies were to attract technology companies to manufacture electronic equipment like handphones, computers and touch screens at the park.
The Malay-language translated copy stated that the agreement was signed by Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mansor Othman and Wuhu District deputy secretary Pan Chaohui.
H’ng also wants to know why there has been limited coverage of the investment in the local media while it grabbed headlines in China.
When contacted, a spokesman for Mansor said a press conference will be held tomorrow to explain the matter.

Bury Kit Siang, Dr M tells Johor voters

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pix) has called on the various communities in Johor to ensure that the 13th general election (GE13) will end DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang's political career.
He also called on the people of Malaysia to end the political career of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat through the ballot box in the GE13 to be held soon.
"Lim Kit Siang wants to come here (to contest). I call on the people of Johor, all communities should pool their energy to ensure that the state of Johor will be the 'burial ground' for Lim Kit Siang's politics.
"We must ensure that he (Kit Siang) loses in Johor. The state of Johor will continue to become the 'fixed deposit' for BN (Barisan Nasional)," he said at the programme 'Bicara Minda' organised by the Pulai Parliamentary Constituency's Service Centre which was attended by about 5,000 people last night.
The DAP advisor recently decided to contest the Gelang Patah Parliamentary seat in Johor in an effort by the opposition pact (PR) to penetrate the state, a BN stronghold.
Dr Mahathir said Kit Siang wanted the people to 'Change" and "Transform" the present government led by the BN, but in actual fact, it was the DAP veteran leader that should be changed.
He said Kit Siang had been in politics for too long, beginning in 1964 when he was the political secretary to DAP founder, Devan Nair, who was a former president of Singapore.
"We have changed six prime ministers since independence in 1957, but he has never changed. Give his children or grandchildren a chance," he said.
Dr Mahathir said Anwar too should be rejected because the PKR leader was only interested in becoming prime minister and he was prepared to do anything to achieve his goal. When Malaysia was facing the financial crisis in 1997, he said Anwar merely listened to the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Michel Camdessus, and World Bank president James Wolfensohn to the extent that the country's economy was "destabilised".
"I felt that he (Anwar) wanted to destroy the country (then), that's why I took over and we took our own measure (to revive the national economy) using our own mould," said Dr Mahathir.
The former prime minister said he also felt the PKR advisor knew that he would lose in GE13, as such, he was preparing to create a commotion and chaos.
As for Nik Abdul Aziz, Dr Mahathir said the PAS spiritual leader should be retiring from politics. Dr Mahathir advised PAS to focus its attention on Kelantan instead of taking the trouble to penetrate Johor because the party had no influence in the state, according to Bernama reports.
In an immediate response, Kit Siang wrote in his blog: "I am prepared to submit my political life to the people of Gelang Patah ... comprising some 53% Chinese voters, 33% Malay voters and over 12% Indian voters." He also Mahathir to fight him, saying: "Is Mahathir prepared to submit his political life to the voters of Gelang Patah?"
