PM: Don’t politicise deaths of security forces

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has questioned the motive of PAS Dewan Ulama head Datuk Harun Taib over his reported remarks that the deaths of the security forces in Sabah cannot be consideredsyahid akhirat (martyrs for the cause of the hereafter).
“This is not the time for us to turn the lives of the security forces into a political issue according to one's whim and fancy.
“It is not that we wished to see lives sacrificed. But when we were attacked, we were forced to defend ourselves,” the Prime Minister said yesterday.
He was commenting on remarks by Harun in Kuala Terengganu on Saturday that the deaths of the security members in defending the country were merely as martyrs for the cause of worldly principles (syahid dunia).
Harun said this in response to a National Fatwa Council consensus that the policemen and soldiers had died as martyrs in the context of syahid akhirat.
Najib said Harun's remarks went against the ruling of the fatwa council.
“The council had stated that the members of the security council had died a martyr's death (in the cause of the hereafter) because they fell while defending the lives, property and families of the people as well as in defence of the country's sovereignty and dignity.
“We regret that even dying as martyrs is being politicised.
“What's their agenda now?” the Prime Minister questioned, reminding the people that an Opposition leader had, before this, claimed the intrusion into Lahad Datu was just a drama orchestrated by Umno.
He was speaking at the handing over of letters to 800 imam and chairmen of village security and development committee (JKKK) members to perform the haj later this year under a programme sponsored by the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) Foundation here yesterday.
Putra Mosque Imam Kamarudin Said represented the recipients in pledging support for the Barisan Nasional leadership.
“The Barisan government has taken good care of Islam and the needs of its followers.
“We pledge to work hard to ensure Najib continues to lead the country,” he said.
