Helping teachers seeking transfers

THE Education Ministry is taking measures to help teachers seeking transfers to be near their families.

Deputy Minister II P. Kama-lanathan said the ministry acknowledged the depth of the issue but added, however, that transfers could be approved only if there was an opening in schools requested by the teachers.
"Placements and transfers of teachers are based on vacancies, need for service, need for teachers of a particular subject and the teacher's preferred option," he told the Dewan Rakyat.
He was replying to a question from Datuk Othman Abdul (BN-Pendang), who asked the ministry to explain the constraints faced in approving teachers' transfer requests.
Kamalanathan said as of July 31, 94.9 per cent of secondary school teachers and 95.4 per cent of primary school teachers lived with their spouses.
"The ministry is doing everything possible to place married couples in the same area. Our data shows that fewer that five per cent of teachers have issues about being placed in schools far from their spouses.
"Although it is a small percentage, we are working on correcting this problem."
Kamalanathan said the ministry was taking various initiatives to encourage commercialisation of local universities' research and development products.
He said one such initiative was Pencipta, a biennial event that showcases products created by university students.
"Private companies will visit this event and their representatives will select products that have the potential for commercialisation. This provides an opportunity for students to introduce their products to the market."
Kamalanathan said this year, several international universities had expressed their interest to be part of Pencipta, which was proof that the event provided a platform for research products to be commercialised.
