MP: No reason to stop Lynas if safety rules are met

It is unreasonable to stop the operation of rare earth plant Lynas if all safety and security requirements are met, said an Opposition MP.
Online news portal The Mole quoted PKR’s Indera Mahkota MP Azan Ismail as saying that it was premature to decide on the fate of the rare earth plant without thorough deliberation on the matter.
Azan’s constituency is where the plant is to be located.
“I may not be an expert on environmental or safety aspects of the plant like Fuziah (PKR Wanita chief Fuziah Salleh) but I believe if Pakatan Rakyat wins in the coming general election, it will set up a panel to deliberate on the matter,” Azan was quoted as saying.
He added that all aspects would be looked into before a decision was made, including the commercial benefits of the plant to the people.
“If Lynas has passed the panel’s vetting and that of the relevant authorities, I think it is unreasonable for us not to allow it to operate,” he said.
Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier told Australia’sSydney Morning Herald that he would back the project if a new public inquiry proved it to be safe.
Fuziah had later contradicted Anwar’s statement, saying that the plant should not operate in Gebeng “where it is constructed on peat soil, with underground water less than a metre deep from the surface”.
Azan said he supported Anwar’s views on the issue, saying that it was “the most logical explanation anyone could give at the time being”.
