Giving back to society

RURAL healthcare needs more than just undermanned district hospitals and local clinics. Of course, the government's effort to put in place the physical infrastructure is very commendable. Today district hospitals are, in terms of their physical potential, just as well equipped to service the clinics in their area as are the urban ones. Unfortunately, as observed by a doctor serving in Lahad Datu, Sabah, the dearth of qualified medical officers and specialists has brought it all to nought. In rural medicine, too, the human factor is cause for concern as the scramble persists among doctors for urban postings because it is the way to career advancement. That Malaysians have little sense of altruism even when it is the cornerstone of their profession is symptomatic of all that is wrong in the country.
