Tee Yong: Pakatan tertiary education plan misleading

Pakatan Rakyat’s proposal to provide free tertiary education if it comes to power is misleading, said MCA Young Professionals bureau chief Datuk Chua Tee Yong.
He said the Opposition did not tell the people that there was no monthly fee required for both primary and secondary school education.
On tertiary education, Chua said only a handful of countries in the world were providing higher learning education for free.
“Those countries providing free education at university level such as Norway and Denmark are among those collecting high taxes.
“Some of them collect personal taxes as high as 47% and 23% in Goods and Services Tax (GST),” he said after launching SJK (C) Tenang’s new classrooms in Ayer Panas here yesterday.
Chua, who is Labis MP, said in Malaysia the people were paying relatively low taxes and there was no implementation of GST so far.
Developed countries such as Australia did not provide free education despite collecting high taxes and owning much more commodities such as oil and natural resources than Malaysia, he said.
Chua said if tertiary education was offered free of charge, he was afraid that it would lead to decreasing competitiveness among the universities and students.
He said the institutions would not have to worry about bringing in students.
Also, students did not need to compete in a bid to earn scholarships.
Chua also added that PAS would never change its objective to turn Malaysia into an Islamic state.
“Their struggles, policies, intentions and ultimate aim are to implement hudud law,” he said, adding that PAS amended the Terengganu state constitution when it took over the state although the party did not state it wanted to implement hudud law in the state during the 1999 general election.
